Dallas Opera Pioneers Interactive Opera 30 October 2013

Since opening in 2009 Dallas Opera have presented simulcasts of their operatic productions from Winspear Opera House  (Foster+Partners & Sound Space Design).  Venues have included Strauss Square next door to the Winspear Opera House (also Foster+Partners, Sound Space Design & Anne Minors Performance Consultants) and the Dallas Cowboys stadium, relayed on what was until recently the largest video board in the world (at 50m’ wide x 27m high).

On a night of firsts, last Friday night saw in the opening night of the Dallas Opera’s season with the debut performance by Emmanuel Villaume as Musical Director of the Dallas Opera (only the third person ever to be named to that position in the 56-year history of the company), the first simulcast and artistic collaboration with Klyde Warren Park (a community green space built over the freeway running alongside the Opera House), on the parks first anniversary.   The House was full and 3,700 crowded into the park.

And the theme continues.  Coming up in the 2013-2014 season is a collaboration with MIT Media Lab’s Tod Machover in which the Dallas Opera will present the worlds first interactive opera, “Death and the Powers”, from the Winspear Opera House.  On Sunday February 16th 2014 at 2 pm central time the opera “Death and the Powers” will be simulcast to locations across the US, London and Stockholm.  Patrons will be able to interact with the performance on stage to influence the opera visuals in real time and experience the opera from different perspectives.

Death and the Powers is one facet of the MIT Media Lab Opera of the Future Program, directed by Tod Machover (Professor of Music and Media at MIT Media lab, visiting Professor of Composition at London’s Royal Academy of Music and “America’s most wired composer” Los Angeles Times).

The video below presents a short introduction to the opera by it’s composer Tod Machover:
