The birthplace of Beethoven, Bonn stages a festival every summer to celebrate the composer.

In collaboration with Valentiny Architects of Luxembourg, AMPC and SSD’s design incorporated cascading tiers of audience flowing down to the stage – the orchestra is at the heart of the auditorium and connected to its audience on all sides.

The room is exceptionally flexible: the ceiling moves to reduce the room volume for an intimate chamber music acoustic when only the lower 800 seats of 1500 are used. The ceiling also integrates loudspeaker and lighting systems while acoustic curtains can control the sound for amplified and speech events. Acoustically, the volume above the ceiling acts like a reverberation chamber to enhance resonance and the lower walls are carefully tilted to provide immersive sound reflections.
