Broadway Cinema is an independent cinema in Nottingham screening international and art house movies. It also produces its own work and runs education programmes in digital arts and media.
Sound Space Design was approached by the architect to provide acoustics design and review services for the cinema refurbishment projects. We provided details and recommendations for building-wide sound isolation and mechanical services, but also looked in detail at the room acoustics of new screens, screens 3 and 4, and for the new MediaLab. One screen was named the Paul Smith auditorium, with seating design by fashion designer Paul Smith, who cites the cinema and the films he viewed there as influential and inspirational.
Sound Space Design reviewed and validated a CATT Acoustic computer model built by Nottingham Trent University of the new spaces, proposing alterations to finishes to provide suitable acoustic environments for cinema and production work.
