The Sackler Centre V&A Auditorium, with green leather seats

The V&A, considered to be one of the world’s greatest museums dedicated to art and design, is a Grade I listed building. As part of its long-range FuturePlan to transform the museum, SSD were involved in several projects: the V&A Café, the Middle East Islamic Galleries; and two other major projects – the development of ten Medieval and Renaissance galleries in the east wing, and the Sackler Centre for Arts Education housed in the Henry Cole wing.

These projects required great sensitivity towards the historic fabric of the building, particularly during the construction of a new auditorium within the Sackler Centre. SSD worked to ensure this multi-purpose educational facility had the highest acoustical standards designed into the modern additions, including large areas of glazing and movable acoustical walls.

AMPC helped to develop the brief for the Centre for classes, workshops, and resident artists, and briefed the theatre so that lectures and performances of different cultures could be showcased.

The V & A projects have won multiple RIBA, BCI and Civic Trust awards, including a RIBA and English Heritage Special Award in 2010 for sustaining the historic environment.
